Understanding the Challenges and Opportunities in Cotton Crop Production in Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh, India
Dr. K. Visweswara Reddy, Dr. E. Lokanadha Reddy
Optimal site for locating borehole has been delineated on the basis of empirically derived aquifer hydraulic parameters. To that end, seventeen VES data were quantitatively interpreted via partial curve matching technique and the starting models refined by means of 1D Forward modelling with iteration to obtain geoelectric characteristics. The results indicted presence of varying geo-electric earth-layer models, ranging from 3- to 5- earth-layer models. Curve type analysis revealed that Htype and HA-type curves are predominant in the study area. The conceptual aquifer model showed a preponderance of Weathered/fractured aquifer systems archetypal to basement complex environments. The aquifer unit resistivity ranges...
Corruption, Economic Freedom, and Economic Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Empirical Investigation
Ceyhun Haydaroğlu
Institutional weakness, including corruption and weak governance, has been identified as a major hindrance to economic growth in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. This study investigates the relationship between corruption, economic freedom, and economic growth in SSA countries from 1996-2014 using a multivariate cointegration and error-correction framework. The study finds that economic freedom Granger-causes economic growth in the short term, while economic freedom and economic growth Granger-cause corruption in the long term. Furthermore, there is positive unidirectional causality from economic freedom and economic growth to corruption in the long term and positive unidirectional causality from economic freedom to economic growth in...
The Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Trade Flows in Emerging Market Economies: A Study of Extensive and Intensive Margins
Pritam Chatterjee
This study analyses the impact of the global economic crisis that began in 2008 on trade flows in emerging market economies (EMEs). Using data from 2003 to 2012, including the pre-crisis period of 2003-2007 and the crisis and post-crisis period of 2008-2012, the study focuses on the impact of the crisis on trade at the extensive and intensive margins. The results show that the crisis had a more severe impact on bilateral trade flows that did not exist before 2006. This study adds to the existing literature on the effects of economic crises on international trade and provides insights into...
Thomas Tooke's Contributions to 19th Century Monetary Theory and Policy
Ayse Ozden Birkan
This paper examines the contributions of Thomas Tooke to 19th century England’s monetary theory and policy discussions. Tooke was a prominent economist who formulated his own ideas on money and prices, which became the basis of the Banking School position. The paper provides an overview of his economic writings, focusing on his second period, and discusses Tooke's ideas on credit money, endogeneity of the money supply, interest rate, monetary transmission mechanism, balance of payments adjustments, and free banking. Tooke's central point was that the amount of money in circulation was endogenously determined by the demand for money, and that the...
Economic and Political Factors Influencing Corruption in Developing Countries
Salih TÜREDİ, Ali ALTINER
Corruption is a global issue that is known to disproportionately affect developing countries. It has a detrimental impact on resource allocation, government and public policy, and the development of the private sector. To design effective policies to combat corruption, it is essential to identify the factors that influence it. This study aims to contribute to the literature on corruption in developing countries by investigating the economic and political factors that influence it. The study employs a fixed effects model with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors to estimate the impact of economic growth, economic freedom, trade openness, inflation, democracy, and political stability on...
