FIELDS OF PROSPERITY: THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF SUGAR ESTATES IN MAURITIUS
Aisha Patel, Rajesh Kumar Singh
Mauritius, an island nestled in the South West Indian Ocean, has a unique historical and demographic landscape. Unlike many other regions, it has never had an indigenous population; instead, its inhabitants are all immigrants. This article explores the history of immigration to Mauritius, which occurred in three distinct waves, comprising the Dutch, the French, and the British. The British period saw a significant influx of Indian immigrants, primarily to meet the labor demands of the booming sugarcane industry. Slavery abolition in 1835 led to the recruitment of cheap labor from India, predominantly from North India. These laborers, known as indentured...
ACCOUNTABILITY DYNAMICS IN ESTONIAN RURAL GOVERNANCE: BRIDGING THE GAPS
Elena Maria Petrova
Social work, as a profession, manifests in various forms and serves distinct purposes, contingent upon the specific social and political milieu in which it operates (Weiss-Gal & Levin, 2010; Payne, 2008). In Estonia, the resurgence of social work as a profession in 1991 signified a significant reclamation within the post-communist societal landscape following the reestablishment of independence. This developmental trajectory of social work in Estonia is indelibly influenced by its initial period of independence, the legacies of "Old Europe," and the Soviet era (Raudava, 2013a). The essence of social work intersects with social welfare, witnessing a transformation into the realm...

Ananya Sharma, PK. Reddy Raja
Development-induced displacement is a global phenomenon with severe implications for the socio-economic rights and livelihoods of affected communities. The study uses anthropological tools to assess impoverishment risks, including landlessness, joblessness, homelessness, marginalization, food insecurity, and loss of access to common property resources. The study reveals that inadequate implementation of the rehabilitation and resettlement policy has exacerbated impoverishment risks for the displaced people, including loss of their traditional livelihoods and...
COLLABORATIVE CARE: CULTURAL BROKERS AND PARENT PARTNERS IN CHILD WELFARE
David Thompson
Annually, more than 400,000 children become part of the out-of-home placement (OOH) system within the United States foster care network (HHS, 2017). Within this demographic, children of color, particularly African American, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American youth, are conspicuously overrepresented among those placed in out-of-home settings (Assink et al., & Stams, 2018; Bowie, 2003; Crofoot & Harris, 2013; Horton & Watson, 2015; Krase, 2015; Shaw et al., 2008). This disproportionality in the foster care system has prompted researchers nationwide to scrutinize its underlying causes and scrutinize the differing outcomes for children of color in comparison to other groups within the foster...
