INFRARED MICRO-SPECTROSCOPY AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL FOR AMYLOIDOSIS SUBTYPE IDENTIFICATION
Marie van der Berg Sofia
The aim of this study was to assess the use of Synchrotron Radiation Fourier Transform InfraRed micro spectroscopy (SR micro-FTIR) in the diagnosing and subtyping of different misfolded proteins in various tissues and organs. To this end, specimens from various organ sites were investigated. Multivariate data analysis was applied to correlate the spectral datasets with histological and immunohistochemical findings and clinical data. The results of the study reveal significant segregation of tissues affected by amyloidosis and controls, but the observed amount of amyloid β-sheet did not correlate with the disease state. Amyloid light-chain type specimens contained more βsheet structures than...
EXPLORING THE CAUSAL LINK BETWEEN SLEEP DURATION AND BREAST CANCER: A MENDELIAN RANDOMIZATION STUDY
Rui Wang Jianhong
Background: Previous observational studies reported that sleep traits were associated with breast tumors. However, the causal relationship between sleep duration and breast tumors is not clear. Methods: We performed a two-sample bi-directional Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis with publicly available Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) summary statistics to detect the causal relationship between genetically predicted sleep duration and the risk of breast tumors, including breast cancer (Estrogen Receptor (ER)+/ER-, Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (HER)2+/HER2-), benign breast tumors and carcinoma in situ of the breast. The Inverse Variance Weighting (IVW) method was used as the gold standard for MR results and MR...
CONSERVATIVE MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE APPENDICITIS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW OF EFFICACY AND SAFETY
Aisha Farhana Rahman
Non-operative management of acute appendicitis has seen an increasing trend in the management of acute appendicitis, especially after the Covid-19 outbreak. With better imaging modalities like computerized tomography and better broad-spectrum antibiotics, non-operative treatment of acute appendicitis is now considered as an alternative to appendectomy. This article will investigate the role of non-operative treatment of acute appendicitis in adults and children and compare its efficacy and recurrence rate. We will look at the type and duration of antibiotic therapy. The effectiveness of non-operative treatment is also compared with appendectomy in the treatment of acute appendicitis.
HEALTHCARE WORKERS’ PERSPECTIVES AND THEIR EFFECT ON TB PATIENT OUTCOMES: A STUDY FROM HHOHHO REGION
David Akinyemi Oluwaseun
Health care workers’ attitude is one of the factors that can either motivate or discourage patients from adhering well to treatment. Swaziland is one of the countries that is highly burden with TB/HIV co infected diseases and all effort is being put in place for its eradication by 1935. This projection is according to WHO summit in the year 2015. Training and motivation are the major factors that affect health care workers attitude towards TB patients within a health care set up. The aim of the study is to know the effect of health care workers’ attitude on TB patients...
