This paper examines the emergence of modern architecture in Portugal in the early 1920s. The paper argues that a small number of young architects, trained at the Beaux-Arts, were inspired by the theories of the great European pioneers of modern architecture and experimented with new forms and techniques. The paper begins by discussing the context of Portuguese architecture in the early 20th century, which was dominated by eclecticism and historicism. It then discusses the work of several key architects, including Miguel Nogueira, Carlos Ramos, Francisco Oliveira Ferreira, and Porfirio Pardal Monteiro.
The paper concludes by arguing that the work of these architects was an important contribution to the development of modern architecture in Portugal.
